Sustainability isn’t a Space to Compete
Primary user actions are inflection points that initiate motion, transforming the whole design. Google’s open-source system for designing and developing beautiful, usable products. For example, there’s now a greater emphasis on white space, the usage of bottom navigation bars, and the inclusion of colorful icon sets. And, so, websites and apps all began to look the same way as a result. To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with working from a template or components. The problem with Material Design, though, was that everyone was working from the same design system and rules.
Within the guidelines, much of the specifics of how to implement the design are left entirely up to the designer. This enables an app’s or website’s users to more naturally respond to the UI as they understand how to touch and move around objects just as they would in the physical environment. The overall goal of Material Design was to enable designers to quickly build apps that were responsive, usable, and scalable. Consequently, there’s been a seismic shift that apps, and eventually websites underwent thanks to Google’s design system and language — Material Design. Something to keep in mind while undergoing any website redesign for UX is to stay consistent with your changes. Google’s Material Design initiative is above all meant to unify and synthesize website design efforts so that every website is aiming to meet the same standards of usability.
What Are the Core Principles of Material Design?
Google Search tests a small but overdue design tweak on Android - Android Police
Google Search tests a small but overdue design tweak on Android.
Originally introduced in 2014, this grid-based design system got adopted, spread like wildfire, and then took on a new life. It’s imperative for web designers to stay ahead of the curve of new technologies and current web trends, to present a website that consistently answers the needs of the consumer. The point of adapting to Material Design techniques is to keep your website current and up-to-date to accommodate the evolving needs of today’s consumer. Another notable Material Design venture is seen in Reddit’s News Pro app, which uses one of the most important aspects of Material Design – cards – to its full potential. Each card contains unique data, such as a photo, text, or link about a single subject. Users read these cards easily, and they act as doors for more complex and detailed information.
In Material Design we try not to let objects do magical things, such as vanish or move on their own. Instead, we translate the familiarity of the limited, physical world onto screens that have unlimited potential. CSS utilities allow you to move faster and make for a smooth developer experience when styling any component. A meticulous implementation of Material Design; every Material UI component meets the highest standards of form and function. They are self-contained, and will only inject the styles they need to display.
Material web, also known as Material Web Components or MWC, is a library of web components that follows Google's Material Design guidelines. Develop a single underlying system that allows for a unified experience across platforms and device sizes. Mobile precepts are fundamental, but touch, voice, mouse, and keyboard are all first-class input methods.

These circular buttons only include space for an icon, with no assistive text included. And because icons can be so open to interpretation, in many cases, users are left questioning what these buttons actually do. Its comprehensiveness can also lead to some designers feeling constrained and unable to fully realize their own creativity. It can also stifle innovation, since virtually any design challenge has been planned for and solutions offered.
Material Design also explained how exactly (and why) to design them a certain way to create a user-first experience. Each section breaks down how the component works and why it needs to work that way. Going back to that point from the NNG, Material Design fixes the issue stemming from a lack of depth and other key signifiers in flat design. When looked at head-on, a sheet of paper appears flat and two-dimensional.
In 2014, the release of Material Design made huge waves across the design community — not just for Android development, but for iOS apps and websites as well. But Material Design is much more comprehensive than most design systems. Enables personalizing ads based on user data and interactions, allowing for more relevant advertising experiences across Google services. In the final lesson, you’ll step outside the classroom and into the real world. You’ll understand the role of a UX designer within an organization and what it takes to overcome common challenges at the workplace.
That said, there are plenty of other use cases outside of the Android platform where Material Design is a solid choice. As the design system matures even further, those situations are bound to increase. Despite all this comprehensiveness and documentation, Material Design remains a fairly flexible design library.
Beginners may find that the Material Design specification is more complicated and harder to implement than other styles like flat design. Because the Material Design system is so comprehensive, there are a lot more things to consider and adhere to than many new designers may be comfortable with. Finally, dark theme options have been made available, adding even more visual flexibility for designers. Originally, Material Design was very light and bright, which didn’t work well with the aesthetics of some brands. Google’s Material Design is effectively an entire design ecosystem, rather than just a set of style guidelines. If there’s a potential design situation that exists, Material Design likely has a comprehensive set of rules for how to handle it.

If the company is hard to get ahold of, the representatives are rude, or the service is impossible to cancel, that lowers the rating. How much should you pay for a smart home security system?
Customers we talked to found SimpliSafe to be the, well, simplest way to go for home security. We just shopped online and installed everything ourselves,” says SimpliSafe user Ben Currey, a family man in Murray, Utah. A few years ago, he moved into a new neighborhood that was only partly finished, and a rash of robberies and other crimes accompanied the construction period. Ben and his neighbors all scrambled to protect their homes and families by signing up for home security.
But the good news is that you're never on the hook with SimpliSafe for very long—you can start and stop monitoring when you want. Through our in-house tester we learned about customer service, the company's refund policy, installation, and the system's daily performance. For $28 per month, it includes video recording and monitoring and smart device integration plus a lifetime extended warranty. CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) and home security cameras both capture and record video footage to enhance the security of a location.
(The Abode Iota uses Wi-Fi, but we don’t recommend that system.) We found the Abode Gateway hub to be less attractive and a little bulky compared with our other picks, about the same size as a standard router. We test security systems in our homes, our friends' homes, and our extended family's homes. We compare how each one performs in different settings and to meet different needs.

We also like the Pro version of this package, but the second-gen kit is a bit newer and doesn’t force you to use the built-in router (we prefer picking out our own routers). For $200 to $250, you get the Gateway and just one door/window sensor, one motion sensor, and a key fob.

For those looking for a home security system without a contract, we recommend SimpliSafe. SimpliSafe is designed to be self-installable, but the company does offer professional installation for a separate fee. Additionally, while ADT offers four packages, Simplisafe offers five packages based on the size of your home and the amount of equipment you need, as well as two monitoring plans. While professional installations and professional monitoring are options, you can save a fortune by choosing only the equipment you need and installing and monitoring it yourself. Everything can be managed through the Verisure app and, for £32 a month, Verisure will monitor your home. If you decide to use Verisure, you will have a choice of self-monitored and professionally monitored systems, although the professionally monitored option can be expensive. Prices aren’t openly advertised, which means you will have to request a quote if you want to know how much it will cost you. However, reports suggest that it is slightly more pricey than some competitors. It's also compatible with a number of other smarthome devices, which can be configured so that even when you are away, indoor and outdoor lighting can be programmed to simulate someone at home.
If you’re on the hunt for a smart home security system that doesn’t require you to lift a finger, Vivint is the best of the bunch. Vivint’s high-end equipment with pro installation, 24/7 monitoring, smart home features, and state-of-the-art security tech make it the best wireless security system available. You can add Virtual Security Guard9 to a compatible Ring Protect subscription for an additional $99/month per location.
We suggest going up a step and picking the still-affordable $160 smart security kit, which adds a motion sensor to the package and expands smart home compatibility to Apple Home/Siri as well as Alexa and Google Assistant. We know it’s not easy to find a home security system that works with the Apple Home app, especially at a low price, so Apple fans may be especially pleased. If you’re looking for professional monitoring, Abode does offer it with its Pro plan, which also includes cellular backup. It will cost $25 per month, which isn’t exactly friendly for the budget conscious but saves you significant money compared to the most expensive plan.

Aid organizations have welcomed the plan, which will be an addition to the airdrops of humanitarian supplies that the U.S. military has been conducting over Gaza. But aid workers say, and defense officials have acknowledged, that the maritime project is not an adequate substitute for land convoys. Such aid convoys fell sharply when the war began more than six months ago and have only partly recovered. Army engineers on Thursday began construction of a floating pier and causeway for humanitarian aid off the coast of Gaza, which, when completed, could help relief workers deliver as many as two million meals a day for the enclave’s residents, Defense Department officials said. The seven workers were killed on April 1 after they helped unload a barge of food aid in northern Gaza and were heading to Rafah, a city in the south. Israeli military officials said the attack was a serious mistake that should not have happened.

These humanitarian organizations have a direct line to the I.D.F. and come from Western countries, including Israel’s strongest allies. Some of the locations struck had been clearly marked or located in a special humanitarian zone that Israel said was safe for civilians. Aid workers have described bottlenecks for aid at border crossings because of lengthy inspections of trucks, limited crossing hours and protests by Israelis, and they have highlighted the difficulty of distributing aid inside Gaza. Israeli officials have denied that they are hampering the flow of aid, saying the United Nations and aid groups are responsible for any backlogs.
A U.N. aid chief says ‘every day counts’ in the efforts to relieve the suffering in Gaza.
But the workers took the risk, he said, because they believed that showing up and feeding people in their darkest hours would let them know they were not alone. Israel has announced efforts to increase the flow of aid into Gaza, including by opening an additional border crossing and by accepting shipments at a nearby port. But the United Nations has warned with increasing urgency that a famine is looming and that deliveries still fall short of the level needed to stop the spread of starvation.
Mr. Johnson even seemed to suggest that Netzah Yehuda may suffer no American consequences at all, even though Israeli officials have indicated that they expect imminent U.S. action against the battalion. The pattern indicates that in Israel’s battle against Hamas, not even the places with every available avenue of protection are safe from I.D.F. strikes. “Given the scale and scope of destruction and the extent of human suffering, every day counts,” she added. Another analyst noted that wartime estimates of battlefield tolls could be suspect. “All parties probably have a vested interest in showing that they’re doing great and minimizing their losses,” said Matthew Levitt, director of the counterterrorism program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a research organization. After several months of cleaning, the two enlisted their parents' help to get it down to the studs.

The floating pier is being built alongside an Army ship off the Gaza coast. Army ships are large, lumbering vessels, so they have armed escorts, particularly as they get within range of Gaza’s coast, defense officials have said. The construction on the “initial stages of the temporary pier and causeway at sea” means that the project’s timing is in line with what Pentagon officials had predicted, Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder, the Defense Department’s press secretary, said. The construction is meant to allow humanitarian aid to bypass Israeli restrictions on land convoys into the besieged strip. In December, Mr. Biden said that Israel was losing international support over its “indiscriminate” bombing of Gaza. And in April, after the Israeli military killed seven aid workers with World Central Kitchen, he said Israel had “not done enough to protect civilians” and suggested that future U.S. aid could be dependent on Israel taking concrete steps to do so.

The Senate could take up the package this coming week, and President Joe Biden has said he supports the bill and will sign it. The new bill was passed , with strong support from a majority of both Republicans and Democrats. It’s part of a larger package that includes foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, and was likely included as a way for House Speaker Mike Johnson to attract more conservative support.
The operation is expected to bring in enough aid for around 90 trucks a day, a number that will increase to 150 trucks a day when the system reaches full operating capacity, the official said. The United States has proposed a deal through Egyptian and Qatari intermediaries in which Hamas would release 40 of the most vulnerable hostages in exchange for a six-week cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hundreds of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. A senior administration official who briefed reporters on Thursday on condition of anonymity under official ground rules put the blame solely on Hamas for blocking the deal. “The fate of the hostages and the civilian population in Gaza, who are protected under international law, is of international concern,” the leaders said in a joint statement. "Imagine having a house back in the day and you could play music everywhere in it from a record player," he says. "The record player was still there when we bought the house, so that was really cool."
Judd said she relied on her “chosen family” to process her mother’s death, as Aloe Blacc did with his own after Avicii’s suicide. The 56-year-old also opened up about her own mental health struggles and successes. She experienced childhood depression after being molested at age 7, she said, and, because of that she knew well the feeling of “not wanting to be here.” However, she started treatment in for her unresolved childhood grief and sexual trauma. A day after Naomi Judd’s death, the Country Music Hall of Fame moved forward with the induction of her and daughter Wynonna. “I’ve learned in recovery that I can pretend to care but I can’t pretend to show up,” Ashley Judd said on a panel discussion alongside Vivek Murthy, surgeon general of the U.S., and Shelby Rowe, executive director of the Suicide Prevention Research Center. Tupac’s estate is not happy about Drake cloning the voice of the late Shakur in a recent song.
Efforts to ban TikTok go back to the Trump administration, but the issue has been revived in recent months. The House already passed a similar bill in March — a bill that the Senate showed little interest in taking up. This new version expands the window for ByteDance to sell TikTok to nine months (compared to six months in the previous bill) and gives the president the ability to grant a single, additional 90-day extension.
A Hezbollah official and a senior Lebanese intelligence official, both of whom spoke anonymously to discuss the sensitive subject, denied Mr. Gallant’s numbers on Thursday. The joint statement seemed meant to counter the perception that the world is entirely against Israel and to send the message that Hamas is the impediment to ending the war in Gaza. A senior Hamas official said earlier this month that Hamas did not have 40 living hostages in Gaza who met the criteria for an exchange under a proposed cease-fire agreement. While cleaning out the home, they found some of the original furniture, old photos of what the house looked like before, and a record player that was hooked up to speakers all over the house.
Publicly, the Israeli military has named nine Hezbollah fighters whom it has eliminated and described as “commanders” on the Telegram messaging app since Oct. 7. Some were described as senior figures in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit, and others were said to have been involved in the group’s drone operations. In reality, Mr. Kassir said, out of 100,000 Hezbollah fighters, no more than 20 of the roughly 270 members that the group has acknowledged have been killed were commanders.
But analysts doubt whether Israel’s increasing use of targeted killings would weaken the militant group. The official said that Israel was dedicating a brigade to provide security for the American troops and aid workers working on the pier. Shuttle boats run by aid organizations, the United Nations or other countries are then expected to transport the aid to the floating pier, where it is to be loaded onto trucks driven by “a third party,” the official said.
Following reports that the State Department might recommend it be denied U.S. military aid, Israeli officials have pressed the U.S. government not to cut off aid to the battalion in what would be the first action of its kind by the Biden administration. Senior Biden administration and military officials detailed a complex plan in a Pentagon call with reporters on Thursday afternoon, explaining how the pier and causeway are being put together, and how it is supposed to work. Army engineers are constructing the facility aboard Navy ships in the eastern Mediterranean.
Hezbollah has lost a significant number of fighters and commanders during the war with Israel, Mr. Levitt said. Hezbollah seldom releases details about the ranks of its slain fighters, often denying the Israeli military’s claims about their roles. Analysts say, however, that the group’s responses to targeted strikes are often indicative of the significance of the fighters killed. The official said the United States and its partners would test that proposition in coming days. It also came a day after Hamas publicly released a video showing Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli American hostage who was grievously injured during the Oct. 7 attack that killed 1,200 people.
"It was a very eventful first weekend of just trying to maintain what the house looked liked and not letting it get worse," Phipps says. When the two took possession of the home, it had been empty for four years, the couple said. A family built it in the 1960s, and then it was passed down to two siblings, a son and a daughter. The son, an architect, lived in the home for many years, and then, when he passed away, the house went to his sister, who then sold it to Phipps and Volkov. The causeway at sea is different from the floating pier where the aid will be offloaded into Gaza. An engineering unit with the Israeli military will anchor the floating pier to the Gaza shore, a senior military official told reporters in the Pentagon call. Biden officials are insistent that the Pentagon can carry out aid deliveries through the floating pier without putting American boots on the ground in Gaza. Officials described a complicated shuttle system, through which aid would be loaded onto Navy ships in Cyprus and transported to a causeway — a floating platform — at sea.

For May 7, an iPad refresh has been rumored for months, and Apple’s Let Loose announcement features an illustration of a hand holding an Apple Pencil. President Biden said in his remarks on Wednesday that the amount allocated for Gaza was $1 billion. The bill explicitly bars any of the funding from going to UNRWA, the largest aid group on the ground. The Israeli military investigated the incident and disciplined three Netzah Yehuda commanders, but brought no criminal charges against its soldiers.

An animated space comedy produced by Tom Phillips of We Made A Thing Studios, its story turns on an anxious space princess who is thrust out of her sheltered life and into a galactic quest to save her bounty hunter ex-girlfriend from the Straight White Maliens. “This film will be a hilarious love letter to lesbians, an ode to low-budget anime and most importantly, heaps of fun,” says Varghese. Countries including the United States have tried to find air and sea routes into Gaza, but aid groups say delivery by truck would be far more efficient. They have described deep the challenges in navigating Israeli security checkpoints and in traveling through a war zone, including impassable roads, unexploded ordnance and fuel shortages. Ms. Kaag, a Dutch former finance minister and deputy prime minister, was appointed by the United Nations in December to improve efforts to get aid into Gaza. The role was laid out in a Security Council resolution that aimed to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has been under intense Israeli bombardment since the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks. That was slightly higher than the average of 185 trucks daily in the two weeks before that — but still far short of the 300 trucks of food that the World Food Program estimates are needed per day to begin to meet people’s basic needs.

The 76-year-old country star died in April 2022, a day before mother-daughter duo the Judds — made up of Naomi and eldest daughter Wynnona — was inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame. The family initially said they lost her “to the disease of mental illness.” Then, weeks later, Ashley Judd confirmed during a “Good Morning America” interview that her mother had used a gun to end her life. Speaking from the White House after signing the bill on Wednesday, Mr. Biden stressed that the funding was providing “vital support” to bolster Israel’s air defenses against attacks like the retaliatory barrage of drones and missiles that Iran fired earlier this month. Netzah Yehuda has been accused of human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank over several years, including the January 2022 death of a 78-year-old Palestinian-American man in its custody.
Nestled in the heart of bustling Polk Street, The Pour House wine shop and retail store provides an intimate lounge setting that still allows guests to enjoy the energy of one of... The near-complete siege on Gaza has also displaced nearly 1.7 million people and left hundreds of thousands starving as Israel continues to destroy civilian infrastructure and restrict the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid, according to the U.N. Ms. Kaag said that the United Nations was in contact with the Israeli government on urgent measures needed to improve the flow of aid, including easing procedures at Israeli checkpoints, repairing roads and allowing humanitarian convoys to move as scheduled.
They cited a series of failures, including a breakdown in communication and violations of the military’s own rules of engagement. The bill’s inclusion of billions of dollars of military aid with no further limitations on how Israel can use it faced strong opposition from several left-leaning Democrats in Congress. Human rights and foreign policy experts have warned that Israel is violating international humanitarian law, which the State Department has denied, and that the U.S. could be violating its own laws by continuing to send no-strings-attached funding. Some U.S. military officials have also privately expressed security concerns about the project, and General Ryder said that the military was looking into a mortar attack on Wednesday that caused minimal damage in the area where some pier work is supposed to be done. However, he said, U.S. forces had not started moving anything into the area at the time of the mortar attacks. The unit has been investigated in Israel for crimes in the West Bank predating the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attacks against Israel.
Data, the number of aid trucks entering Gaza has risen, but only slightly. In the two weeks ending Monday, the most recent day for which figures were available, an average of 195 trucks had entered Gaza each day through the two main crossings in the south of the territory. The U.N.’s top coordinator for humanitarian aid for Gaza has said that Israel has taken steps to improve the delivery of relief supplies to the enclave but warned that much more must be done to meet the vast need there. Some experts expressed skepticism about whether Israel’s targeted killings could achieve its goal of pushing Hezbollah north of the Litani River in Lebanon, thereby preventing cross-border attacks and allowing the tens of thousands Israeli civilians displaced by the fighting to return. “Half of the Hezbollah commanders in southern Lebanon have been eliminated,” Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said during a visit on Wednesday to Israeli troops along the northern border with Lebanon. “The other half are in hiding,” he added, without providing a specific number or evidence of his claim.
It was the first time he had been shown alive since being taken captive. The White House received a copy of the video on Monday and Hamas posted it online on Wednesday. President Biden and the leaders of 17 other nations called on Hamas on Thursday to release all of the hostages seized during its Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel, an effort to raise international pressure on the group’s leader in Gaza to agree to a U.S.-brokered deal.
The president spent an hour with her family as Avigail, whose name has also been spelled Abigail Edan in some American media, played in the Oval Office, crawling through the Resolute Desk in the same way that John F. Kennedy Jr. famously did as a toddler. The State Department is weighing action against the Israeli military battalion, Netzah Yehuda, under a U.S. law that bars American equipment, funds and training from going to foreign military units found to have committed gross human rights violations. “The State Department will make these judgments,” Mr. Sullivan said at a White House news conference. Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon and is Iran’s most powerful regional proxy, has had intense cross-border clashes with Israeli forces ever since the Hamas-led attacks in Israel on Oct. 7. With little sign of the conflict abating and with diplomatic talks yet to result in a cease-fire, Israel has in recent months begun killing Hezbollah fighters in targeted strikes, reflecting an apparent shift in military strategy. Israel’s defense minister has said that the country’s military has eliminated half of Hezbollah’s commanders in southern Lebanon.

The Category 6 junior suite, located on the Bridge Deck, can be configured with two single beds or one double bed. The spacious junior suite features a slender privacy wall with TVs on either side, a separate vanity area, convertible sleeper sofa, writing desk and chair, two bedside tables, and a closet with ample storage. Category 5 cabins, located on the Bridge Deck, can be configured with two single beds or one double bed.
Lindblad Expeditions bringing enhanced Internet connectivity with Spacex’s Starlink
That isn't the case with bigger expedition ships that often carry at least 200 and sometimes even 400 or 500 people. Our day of walking atop fast ice in Lallemand Fjord came fewer than 72 hours after departing Ushuaia, Argentina, the hub for most Antarctica-bound expedition cruise vessels. As its name suggests, the Expedition Deck is home to the equipment and amenities needed for exploration off ship. Two restaurants provide meal service, with 270˚ (named for the expansive views it offers diners) serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while C. Green’s (named after Ernest Shackleton’s cook) is open for early risers’ breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea. Meal times vary slightly from day to day as they are scheduled around expedition activities.

There is a mudroom with lockers providing storage for boots, thus saving space in cabins. MS Explorer (aka "Nat Geo Explorer") is an expedition vessel designed especially for operations in the polar regions. The ship is perfectly suited for cruising expeditions, carrying wet suits, diving/snorkeling gear, underwater cameras, kayaks, glass-bottom boat and a fleet of Zodiacs. The ship's ROV (remotely operated vehicle) can dive to 1000 ft / 305 m sea depth.

The ship has powerful engines that let it travel at more than 16 knots even in rough seas — several knots more than is typical for most expedition vessels. While all categories accommodate two guests, Category 5 cabins can accommodate up to 3 people. All are equipped with climate control, an expedition command center—including tablets, multiple electrical and USB outlets, a TV, barometer, a National Geographic Atlas, and more—a mini refrigerator, small safe, and robes. Bathrooms are outfitted with a rain shower and directional showerhead, botanically inspired products, and a hair dryer. Enjoy luxury linens and pillows, as well as complimentary insulated water bottles. Some Lindblad vessels are all-inclusive for beverages and gratuities, but National Geographic Quest is not.
In addition, Resolution boasts both a rear-facing marina and side doors at the waterline for loading passengers into Zodiacs — a redundancy that gives the ship an edge in running Zodiac operations amid wind and waves. Many expedition vessels have either a marina or side doors, but not both. Normally, an expedition cruise vessel heading to Antarctica might not reach the Lemaire Channel and Petermann Island until three or four days into the trip. But with an ability to travel at nearly 17 knots, National Geographic Resolution had reached them far faster.

Younger guests interact with naturalists and engage in age-appropriate activities. As of 2024, all alcoholic beverages except premium brands will be included in the guest fare. Because the nature and theme of Lindblad voyages is discovery and enrichment, many passengers are college educated, professionals or academics seeking intellectually stimulating interpretation during their travels. You may find yourself chatting at dinner with a college professor or retired judge.

For those so inclined some of the hikes during the voyage are rated as aerobic. A compact fitness room offers a variety of machines and weights to keep any guest in shape during a cruise on Venture. The fitness room has many windows so working out while viewing nature makes for a good combination.
National Geographic Explorer now roams the world, offering expedition cruises in the Polar regions and cultural enrichment sailings in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. Lindblad and its partner, National Geographic, provide a top team of 14 naturalists, historians and photographers who cruise aboard Explorer. Some have been with Lindblad for years, and they, along with two highly experienced captains, aim to get the ship as close to wildlife as is warranted and give passengers the unique experiences they crave. A cruise on National Geographic Explorer does not come cheap, but you are paying for one of the best expedition offerings with respect to the standard of ship, the number and experience of the staff and the excellent organization. National Geographic Resolution's 69 cabins and suites have the same clean-lined, Scandinavian-influenced decor as its public venues and feature lots of cleverly designed storage spaces that come in handy on longer Antarctica sailings.
While most passengers like to dress resort casual in the evening, Orion has a largely informal, but neat, dress code. It might be wise to pack one smart outfit for the Captain's dinner -- perhaps shirts, ties and jackets for men and dressy blouses for ladies. Most of the crew who'd worked for the ship under its Orion ownership have stayed on with Lindblad.
The real entertainment on Venture is scenery, nature and lectures by onboard experts. Daily briefings of the area along with topical lectures by experts in their fields happen several times per day. We have always facilitated research projects, and now National Geographic Resolution provides a ‘lab’ for researchers needing to stretch grant dollars to get to key sites and do their vital work.
We started our crisp and sunny morning with a ride into the boat basin at Sacajawea Historical State Park. The park is home to the October 16-17, 1805 campsite of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and also the Confluence Project Story Circles installed by the acclaimed artist, Maya Lin. As this is a Food and Wine expedition, we departed for Dunham Cellars, with some passengers going to the Whitman Mission National Historic Site. This is the scene of the tragic 1847 encounter between the missionaries and local natives. The setting for all our activities was at the base of the Blue Mountains, which was lush with the growth of spring.
National Geographic Resolution is one of two nearly identical vessels that Lindblad Expeditions has unveiled in quick succession. The other, the 126-passenger National Geographic Endurance, also has debuted in recent months and is sailing in Antarctica. The result is that passengers on smaller ships in Antarctica get to see far more wildlife and scenery up close than passengers on bigger ships.
Of all cabins, 22 are with small private step-out balconies (with floor-ceiling sliding doors) and 12 (6 pairs) are connecting cabins (via internal doorway access) allowing families to combine 2 adjacent rooms. When Powell, the expedition leader, realized the humpback whales would be sticking around for a while, he was able to make a quick call to put down the Zodiacs to get us out among them. Every day brought something a little different as we stopped at a wide variety of sites. At Neko Harbor, a picture-perfect, mountain-lined bay flanked by a glacier calving into the sea, we landed by Zodiac late one evening to marvel at large numbers of gentoo penguins.
Not so much from a fashion sense but from a practical point of view for the environmental conditions expected. In the tropics, cool, light and sun smart is the key with long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and walking shoes and water-friendly sandals like Tevas, Crocs or Keens. In cooler destinations, a beanie, fleece and waterproof spray jackets and pants are de rigueur. You'll find most guests will dress informally in brand name adventure wear, even for dinner. Neat and practical is more important than showy, so you can safely leave the sequins at home.
There are also 12 large suites located on the top of the ship below the outdoor deck. There are plenty of tables with chairs, bench-style seats, and cushioned loungers. Two infinity-style hot tubs and two igloo lounging pods overlook the back of the ship. The wraparound deck with sections cantilevering over the water provides terrific viewing options.
